Labeed ibn Rabee'a

Al-mukhadhram (one living in two eras)

Labeed ibn Rabee'a, Abu Aqeel, was from Najd, but, in the last stage of his life, he moved to Kufa. He was a knight and poet full of courage and prowess. He composed poetry for a long time in the pre-Islamic period. After converting to Islam, he stopped composing poetry and was content with the Qur'an. He was a prolific poet and many biographical details of his life have been recorded. The Mother of the Believers, Aisha, narrated 12,000 lines of his poetry. The Prophet (PBUH) said, "The most truthful statement ever uttered by a poet is Labeed's: "Surely everything other than Allah is utter vain." He was known for his generosity. He vowed that every time the east wind, that is, a wind known to the Arabs, blew, he would serve food to people. He excelled in poetry while still a boy, and was especially a master of descriptive poetry, particularly description of travels and game. At the age of 145, he died in c. 41 AH/661 AD.
